When will you open formal registration for Volunteers for the Games?

From the 6 February 2017, enthusiastic and motivated members of the public can apply to be a GC2018 volunteer and help shape the games.

What process will I be expected to go through?

Details on what will be involved at our Volunteer recruitment events will be released closer to the time of each phase, but you can expect information about the Games, the role of a volunteer, identification requirements, an interview, and other engagement activities. The process will be fun, enjoyable, collaborative, and all about giving you the opportunity to shine and show what a fantastic Volunteer you would be.

When will I be interviewed?

For the Games Time Program, a recruitment and selection process will be established. Further details to be released.

How many Volunteers will you require?

Approximately 15,000.

What provisions are there for people with accessibility requirements?

The Volunteer Program will be an inclusive program and provisions will be made to ensure people with accessibility requirements are given every opportunity to be a part of the program.

Is there a minimum age for volunteers?

Volunteers will need to be 16 years of age at time of application. Youth volunteers may be required in some sports-specific roles, for example ball collectors, athlete kit carriers etc. Further details will be shared on these roles in the future.

What language requirements will there be?

English language is a mandatory requirement of all volunteers.

Do you do criminal record checks?

Yes, a background check will be undertaken for all successful applicants.

Will you require references and if so, how many and by whom?

References may be required for some specialist positions however for general positions this is not a pre requisite.

Do I need to live on the Gold Coast?

For events held on the Gold Coast, it is not a pre-requisite that you are a permanent resident on the Gold Coast to volunteer at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018). You will need to be able to get yourself to the Gold Coast and source your own accommodation to be here for the duration of the Games, as well as be available to attend training prior to the Games. Dates for the training will be advised in early-mid 2017.

Will you be taking international volunteers? What type of visa will I need?

In order to volunteer at the Games, you must have the appropriate right to volunteer in Australia. Getting an appropriate visa will be your responsibility. If you are unable to get a visa, unfortunately we won’t be able to have you as a volunteer at our games.

Please refer to the Australian Government's Department of Immigration and Border Protection website to examine the most appropriate visa and eligibility.

How much time will I need to volunteer?

All volunteers must be available for the duration of the Games (4th-15th April 2018 inclusive). A number of roles will also require volunteers to have availability during the preparation and arrivals period leading into the Games. Average volunteer shifts will be 8 hours in duration.

Precise dates and duration of training will be confirmed in 2017, but you can expect it to be up to 4 days.

I was a volunteer at previous Commonwealth / Olympic Games, can I be guaranteed a place as a volunteer at these Games?

There is no guarantee of places as a volunteer. Each volunteer will go through the same selection process regardless of experience or affiliations and offered positions based on their ability to fill a required role.

I’m interested in performing in the opening / closing ceremonies specifically

There will be a call for Ceremonies Performers in the future. This event will be reported in the media and via the GOLDOC social media and web pages. The process for this will be managed outside of the GOLDOC Volunteer program. However, the crew required for the Ceremonies program will be managed within the GOLDOC Volunteer program and further details to be released.

I’m interested in being in the Queen’s Baton Relay specifically

The Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) may require some volunteers to travel as part of the QBR team throughout various stages of the relay within Australia. Further details to be released.

I’m interested in a particular sport / venue. Can you guarantee this?

We will endeavour to assign positions that meet with people’s preference, however this cannot be guaranteed.

I would like to volunteer with my spouse / family member/s / friend(s).

Can you guarantee we will all get a role as a volunteer and be assigned to the same venue? There are no guarantees for roles. Every role will be selected on merit; however, we will do our utmost to make the experience as convenient and enjoyable as possible for families applying together.

Will accommodation be provided?

No, you will need to provide your own accommodation during the Games.

Will I be paid for my time?

No, volunteers will not be paid for their time.

Will food and beverages be provided?

Depending on the length of your shift, a meal and beverages / refreshments will be provided to you.

Will free transport be provided?

What training will I receive?

The type of training you receive will be dependent on your role. It will cater for role specific training, venue training, and potentially leadership training if you fulfil a team leader role.

Will I get a Uniform and can I keep the Uniform?

Yes, all volunteers will receive a uniform. The uniform remains the property of GOLDOC until the end of the event. You will be able to keep them once the Games have finished.

Will you need volunteers with first aid training?

First aid trained volunteers will be required to provide spectator care at Commonwealth Games competition and non-competition venues. All first aid volunteers must have a current first aid certificate (current at Games time).

Medical, Health Practitioner and First Aid Volunteers

What medical and health disciplines are you looking for?

We are looking for appropriately qualified and experienced volunteers from a range of medical and health disciplines, and those with current first aid training, including:

  • - Sports Medicine practitioners
  • - Sports Massage Therapists
  • - Physiotherapists
  • - General Practitioners
  • - Nurses
  • - Emergency doctors and physicians
  • - Pharmacists
  • - Radiologists and radiographers
  • - Sonographers
  • - Podiatrists
  • - Dentists and dental team members
  • - Optometrist and optometry team members
  • - Orthopedic Surgeons
  • - Sports Physicians
  • - Maxilla-facial (MaxFax) Specialists
  • - First Aiders.

All specialist medical and health practitioners must be appropriately qualified and registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

All first aid volunteers must hold a current first aid certificate (current at Games time).

What is involved in being a Medical and Health Practitioner volunteer?

Our medical volunteers will be involved in all aspects of the Games experience, from athlete care through to spectator first aid. Depending on your experience and qualifications, we will place you in an appropriate role.

Roles are available across a number of areas including:

  • - Multidisciplinary Polyclinic at the Commonwealth Games Village
  • - Field of Play medical teams
  • - Athlete Recovery Facilities at competition venues
  • - First Aid provision at competition venues
  • - Games Family Hotel.
